Apple has officially released iOS 26.5 Beta 1 to registered developers. As the fifth major feature update for the iOS 26 cycle, it focuses heavily on interoperability and privacy, particularly to comply with global digital regulations.
Here is the organized breakdown of the new features and changes:
1. Messaging & Privacy Enhancements
- RCS End-to-End Encryption (E2EE): After a brief appearance in previous betas, E2EE for RCS is now officially enabled by default. This ensures that cross-platform chats between iPhone and Android users are encrypted and secure from third-party interception.
- Ecosystem Switching: A new menu has been added for users moving from iPhone to Android, allowing them to choose whether to transfer all message attachments or only those from the last 30 days or the past year.
2. Interoperability & Third-Party Accessories
- Proximity Pairing: To comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple is testing a “one-tap” pairing process for non-Apple earbuds, mimicking the seamless experience of AirPods.
- Notification Forwarding: Third-party smartwatches can now receive and react to iPhone notifications and sync Live Activities directly to the wearable.
- Note: Enabling this for a third-party device will automatically disable alerts to a connected Apple Watch.
- Magic Accessories: When a Magic Keyboard is plugged into an iPhone via USB-C, it will now automatically establish a Bluetooth connection.
3. Apple Maps & Future Advertising
- Suggested Places: A new section in Apple Maps recommends locations based on nearby trends and your recent search history.
- Ad Foundations: Code in this beta confirms that Apple is preparing to launch search-based ads in Maps this summer. Businesses will eventually be able to purchase placements in search results and the “Suggested Places” menu.
4. Keyboard & General Updates
- New Emojis: Several new emoji characters have been added to the system keyboard.
- Inuktitut Support: A new keyboard layout for the Inuktitut language is now available.
- No Siri Overhaul (Yet): Despite rumors of a “Gemini-powered Siri,” this beta does not include major AI upgrades. These are now widely expected to be the centerpiece of iOS 27, which will be unveiled at WWDC on June 8, 2026.
